Top 10 Public Golf Courses in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is host to over 90 golf courses, 80 award winning. Many of these courses are private while many are open to the public. If you are a first time golfer or amatuer these public courses offer a friendly place to work on your handicap. Public courses in Myrtle Beach also tend to be cheaper to play, something to consider on your golf trip especially if traveling in a group. Generally public courses typically are also more relaxed to play. Here is a list of the top 10 public courses you might want to consider.

  1. The Caledonia Golf Course is a par 70 18-hole public course. The course opened 1994 in Pawley, South Carolina. The course plays over 6500 yards on Bermuda grass. THe backdrop for this course is tall Oaks and running streams. The course’s slope rating is 132. Amenities include pro shop, restaurants and golf carts and club rentals. It was voted “Top 100” in GolfDigest and GolfWeekly.
  2. Dunes Golf Course is located in Myrtle Beach, North Carolina. Dunes Golf Course opened in 1977. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones. The course has a slope rating of 168 and a golf rating of 76.7. Course offers many great amenities including club rentals, driving range, bar, restaurant and pro shop. The Dunes Golf Course has played host to several PGA Senior Championships and one U.S. LPGA Open. THe Dunes Golf Course is known as one of the most scenic courses in all of Myrtle Beach with beautiful oceanside views.
  3. Barefoot Fazio Golf Course is an 18-hole Par 71 public golf course. It was designed by Tom Fazio and built in 2000. Located in the Barefoot Resort in north Myrtle Beach. Fazio course measures over 6800 yards. It has a rating of 73.2 and a slope rating of 145. The layout of the course has a beautiful backdrop of live Oaks, native areas and rolling Pine terrain. The 5th hole is a 467 yard Par 5-hole making for an exciting but challenging hole. The Fazio Course has been ranked America’s top 100 public courses by GolfDigest.
  4. (TPC) Tournament Players Club Golf Course is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Tournament Players Club golf course was designed by Tom Fazio for championship play. The course is a par 72 course with a golf rating of 74.1 and a slope rating of 144. This course played host to the 2000 Senior Tour Championship. Great for all level players looking to improve their handicap.
  5. Arcadian Shores Golf Course is an 18-hole course measuring at 6800 yards. This course is a par 72 with a 73.2 rating. A great course for all skill levels, great fun and challenges. Several course holes play lakeside and there are 64 sand bunkers around the greens. Course is played on beautiful Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. The course was Rees-Jones’ first design in 1974. Practice facilities and golf lessons are available and golfers have access to the Hilton Golf Academy. The PGA named the 13th hole one of the best holes in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. 
  6. Grand Dunes Golf Course is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Grand Dunes Golf Course was designed by Golf Hall-of-Famer Nick Price and architect Craig Stevens. The course is a par 71, 18-hole course. The course plays over 7000 yards with a slope rating of 125 and golf rating of 70. THe Grand Dunes greens are played on lucious Bermuda grass. The Grand Dunes offers many great amenities including club rentals, driving range, bar and pro shop. PGA magazine named this course “ One of the Great Golf Clubs of the World.” Grand Dunes driving range, practice and chipping greens are considered world-class. 
  7. Legends Parkland Golf Course is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Legends Parkland was modeled  after architects Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National) and George Thomas (Riviera Country Club), and has become known as one of the best in Myrtle Beach. THe course is a par 72 which plays along a beautiful backdrop of Pine forest and wetlands. Legends Parkland has a rating of 7.6 and a slope rating of 131. Legends Parkland offers many great amenities including club rentals, golf cart rentals, driving range, bar and pro shop. Legends Parkland also has an amazing restaurant for a great bite after a round of golf.
  8. River Oaks Golf Course is located in Little River, South Carolina. The course is played along over 800 acres of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The course was designed by Gene Hamm and Tom Jackson. The course opened in 1987. River Oaks is a 27-hole par 72 course. The course has a golf rating of 5.9 and a slope of 125. The greens are played on Ultradwarf Bermuda grass. River Oaks golf course also has all the amenities including a Bar, Golf Cart Rentals, Golf Instructors  and Golf Pro Shop. This course also offers a driving range.
  9. Wild Wing Avocet Golf Course is located in Conway, South Carolina. The Wild Wing course was designed by Larry Nelson and Jeff Brauer. This course is a 18-hole par 72 course. It has a golf rating of 74.8 and a slope rating of 135. Wild Wing Avocet golf course also has all the amenities including a Bar, Golf Cart Rentals, Golf Instructors, a restaurant and Golf Pro Shop. The South Carolina Golf Course Association named it “Golf Course of the Year” in 2002 and again in 2003. This course is a great round of play for players of all skill levels and handicaps.
  10. Myrtlewood Palmetto Golf Course is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Myrtlewood Palmetto golf course is a par 72 course. It is located in Myrtle Beach with scenic views of the Intercoastal Waterway and Pine Forests. THe course has a golf rating of 73.3 and a slope rating of 133. The course is great for all levels of play. The greens are played on beautiful TifDwarf Bermuda greens. In 2019 architect Dan Schlegal renovated many of the course’s greens and bunkers.
